Brief History of the Vex game series

The Vex game series started out as an 8-level browser platformer launched in 2013. From the very start, these Vex games stood out for their tough traps, interactive level map, precise controls, and well-designed progression in difficulty level.

Since its first appearance, the series has constantly evolved. With each installment, new game features are added, along with novel traps and twists to challenge your reflexes and agility. There have even been several official spin-offs.

However, the core features of Vex always remain: creative and high-quality level design, smooth animation with great attention to detail, and intuitive controls that allow for quick and ultra-precise movement.

Who created this series?

The first three games in the series were created by Adam Carmicheal (a.k.a. Amazing Adam, Microwave Games), a UK-based independent developer, in collaboration with our partner Yepi. All subsequent Vex games were developed by our partners Agame and Azerion Casual Gaming.

About the Vex games

In the Vex game series, each level is called an Act. The aim is to make it to the green portal at the end of each Act. Along the way, you can save your progress by touching the red flags and turning them green. If you die (which will happen frequently!), you’ll reappear at the last flag you activated. You can try again from there... and again... and again... As many times as it takes.

The series can be split up into the main series, and a collection of spin offs. Read a brief summary of each game below to get an idea of how the series has evolved, or check out the more detailed description by following the links to each game and scrolling down to the bottom of the page.

The Core Series of Vex Games

The main series of the franchise currently contains 10 games, and has been running for well over a decade. The most recent installment was published in September, 2026.

Vex 1 (2013)

The first game features a tutorial level, 8 Acts, and the credits are also a playable level. It also includes a level builder that allows players to create their own levels. Vex 1 was first released in January of 2013 as a Flash game. Because Flash is no longer supported on the web, this game is only playable via preservation tools. We've brought it back so that you can enjoy this game again and see where it all began!

Vex 2 (2013)

Vex 2 introduced several new traps and gadgets, such as moving spikes, swinging platforms, and the ability to lower or strengthen gravity. It also introduced the first “boss level” in the series: The Vexation. True to its name, this extra tough 10th level combined all of your least favorite obstacles into one punishing level. Players who manage to beat The Vexation obtain the coveted achievement “Vexed Much?”.  Vex 1 was first released in June of 2013 as a Flash game. Like the first game, became unavailable when the plug was pulled on Flash at the close of 2020, and is only playable via preservation tools.

Vex 3 (2014, 2017)

This game was first released in 2014, and ported to HTML5 in 2017. For most players these days, this episode was the first Vex game they ever played. This game introduced several new features that have since become a trademark of the Vex series:

  • Interactive Level Hub - The linear level map was replaced with an interactive level hub - a maze in which the levels are hidden. This ‘overworld’ functions both as a tutorial and as an extension of the gameplay itself.
  • Hard Mode - This extra difficult game mode can only be unlocked if players complete the levels in Normal Mode with a Gold Medal. You earn gold medals for completing the level within the target time. Hard Mode levels are packed with more challenging traps and obstacles.

Vex 4 (2018)

Features 9 Acts, Hardcore Mode, and a last appearance of the classic format of The Vexation. Swimming is a bigger part of this particular episode, and the swimming mechanics have been overhauled to enhance tension.

There are two versions of Vex 4. One version also introduces the Challenge Room. This Room is made up of 30 floors that grow longer and more complex as you go. Players who complete all floors earn the special “Challenger” award.

Vex 5 (2020)

This episode featured 9 new Acts and a number of updates focused on player progression and rewards. The Trophy Room and the Achievement system were improved. Vex 5 also brought an overhaul to the way Hardcore Mode levels are shaped, making these levels more unique - much more than simply an amped up version of the normal Mode.

Vex 6 (2021)

This episode featured a significant upgrade to the quality of the visuals. The game is completely optimized for a higher frame rate of 60 frames per second and runs at higher resolution. This technical upgrade also makes the controls amazingly responsive.

Vex 6 also introduced 64 unlockable skins to collect. A rotation of daily tasks and daily bonus levels allow players to pick up extra coins. The Vexation also makes a return in a new and upgraded form, with each block of Acts featuring its own dedicated Vexation master challenge.

Vex 7 (2022)

This episode featured a departure from the usual inanimate obstacles by also including physical enemies and their powerful security systems. Plus, a whole new stand-alone feature: The Tower of Terror.

  • Enemies - There are security guards scattered throughout the levels. You’ll have to knock them out or avoid them to get past them.
  • Security System - Avoid the range of vision of the security cameras. If you get caught, the security system will unleash a deadly laser beam!
  • Tower of Terror - In this separate challenge, players start at the top of a tower. Drop down through the floors of the tower as quickly as you can while dodging the deadly traps. You’ll have to move quickly to stay alive. Train your speed and reflexes while unlocking cool rewards.

Vex 8 (2023)

In this episode, the 8 stands for infinity! Unlike the Challenge Room and  the Tower of Terror, the Infinite Mode in Vex 8 is truly endless. Your run only ends when you run out of lives.

The 9 Acts of this episode contain hidden rooms and secret areas. Only by finding and exploring these areas can players unlock the rarest achievements and trophies.

Vex 9 (2025)

In this installment in the Vex game series, the Jetpack item allows players to blast off into the sky. There’s an emphasis on vertical space and aerial manoeuvres. Fire up your thruster engines and weave between familiar obstacles and several brand new ones. Try not to waste any of your jetpack fuel, because there’s no chance of survival if you run out…

This game also includes a huge library containing over 100 skins, outfits, and accessories. Collect extra coins in the Challenge Mode while dodging laser beams that track your every move!

Vex 10 (2026)

In the most recent installment in the series, you can generate a clone and work together with your original stickman to overcome otherwise impossible obstacles. Another new challenge is gravity inversion. Can you still handle the gauntlet of obstacles while disoriented by gravity reversal?

Complete Daily Tasks for extra coins and unlock over 30 funny and original skins!
